Students of The Medical Esthetics Program will look at the evolution of the esthetics industry and will appreciate the need for advanced education as it leads to a variety of employment opportunities. They will be able to discuss and use critical thinking in choosing safe and effective treatment(s) as it applies to the various skin condition(s). The student will specialize in common laser/light therapies and will be familiarized with the latest technology and its contraindications. They will be introduced to pharmacology and nutrition. Finally, the student will have a vast comprehension of medical interventions such as Botox and the basic procedures of plastic surgery.

Course Description

Year 1

Unit 1 Introduction to the Esthetics Industry and Its Career Opportunitiesopen

This introductory course will explore the past, present and future of the beauty and wellness industry. Students will be familiarized with career opportunities in the field of beauty and cosmetology as well as industry professional ethics, standards and practices

Unit 2 Occupational Health and Safety; and Hygiene, Sanitation, Sterilization and Bacteriologyopen

This unit focuses on the importance of personal and public hygiene, occupational industry standards, all governing Public Health regulations, health and safety, sanitation and infection control guidelines. The implementation of this unit is found in all practical components of the Medical Esthetic courses and is paramount to the overall success of each unit.

Unit 3 Skin Histology, Anatomy and Physiology open

This course will introduce students to the major body systems and their functions. This will provide the foundational knowledge needed for all practical spa treatments. This unit covers the fundamental understanding of the human body and the mechanisms by which the body functions; and will prepare students for subsequent courses. Topics include the structure and functions of the skin, nervous system, circulatory system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, muscular and endocrine systems.

Unit 4 Skin Analysis; Skin Treatments; Basic Chemistry & Electricity; Product Knowledge & Ingredients open

In this comprehensive unit students will learn about the factors that contribute to skin conditions, diseases, and disorders. During this process, students will be able to determine client contraindications, understand skin condition, and communication skills needed in addressing client concerns and expectations during client consultations and post care recommendations. Students will obtain practical experience on a variety of facial machines while performing 60-minute facials. Along with understanding, cosmetic categories and ingredients to develop the students' knowledge of skincare and beauty products.

Unit 5 Introduction to Paramedical Esthetics; Microdermabrasion, Chemical Peels & Light Therapy open

This course introduces the student to non-invasive paramedical esthetic treatments like microdermabrasion both crystal and diamond techniques, chemical peels and Light therapies such as LED. Learning the indications and contraindications through consultation and assessment in theoretical and practical settings preparing the student for real-life settings.

Unit 6 Facial Massage and Treatments open

This course provides both theoretical and hands on understanding of the benefits and contraindications of performing different massage techniques such as effleurage, tapotement, friction, petrissage and vibration. As well as mastering the art of rhythm, speed and contact while performing facial and decollete massages.

Unit 7 Body Care and Treatments open

This course studies the human anatomy and physiology. The student learns to identify the functions and benefits of the muscular, circulatory and lymphatic systems. While observing the motor points of the body and learning the contraindications of performing body care and treatments. The student will enjoy performing the blended Asian and Swedish techniques unique to Protégé School.

Unit 8 Hair Removal by Waxing; Eyelash and Eyebrow Tinting open

This unit studies the morphology of hair and its growth cycles. Students will discuss different methods of temporary and permanent hair removal. With an intensive hands-on practicum component working on all areas of the body focusing on safe and work ready techniques and speed. Students will learn the contraindications of epilation and client consultations. This unit practices shaping and tinting of the eyebrow and lashes.

Unit 9 Make-Up Artistry open

Make-Up Artistry is a thorough course that studies cosmetic color theory, the different types of cosmetics; their use and application. Practicing makeup consultations to determine, makeup preferences, events, along with identifying the different facial features. The student will perform corrective makeup procedures with a variety of makeup looks such as, daytime, evening, and bridal. This course will also introduce the student to the application of artificial eyelashes.

Unit 10 Nail Histology, Safe work Practices; Manicure and Pedicure; Nail Extension open

This course provides students with the opportunity to become proficient in hand and foot care; including paraffin treatments, hand and foot massage, French manicures, and shellac polish through demonstrations and practical applications in a lab setting. Following Spa industry standards, professional attitude, client care as well as the correct use of spa implements and industry required infection control guidelines are paramount to successful completion of the program.

Unit 11 Retail Sales Knowledge, Customer Service and Service Recommendations open

This unit focuses on the importance of customer service, professionalism and confidentiality to maintain a successful business. The student will revisit the fundamental and core components of customer care, professional image and product recommendations in all other hands-on courses throughout the program.

Unit 12 Develop Business/Practice, Management and Communication Skills open

This course’s key elements are learning the fundamentals of establishing a successful business along with the skills required to run a business. Including sales & marketing strategies, management & communication skills, and government & applicable sales tax regulations.

 

Year 2

Unit 13 Medical Sciences for Estheticians and Working in a Medical Settingopen

This course allows the student to look into the esthetician’s role, office etiquette and legalities while working in a medical setting with medical professionals. Visiting the medical terminologies used, pre and post surgery treatment requirements, and discussing medical intervention in the areas of anti-aging such as with Dermal Fillers and Neurotoxins.

Unit 14 IPL, Light Energy and Radio Frequency Therapy open

This course looks into the evolution of light energies and its effect in cosmetic procedures. The student will have an overview of different devices, the different properties of light and energy and understand the tissue response to the many properties of light and energy. This unit will spend time and detail on three different platforms including; Intense Pulse Light; DPC, Radio Frequency, and Infra-Red. Client and technician safety practices and scope of practice of the esthetician are enforced.

Unit 15 Dermal Laser Therapy, Devices & Practices open

This course will briefly visit the history of lasers and its evolution in cosmetic procedures, with an overview of different devices and their different properties. Outlining the different LASER Classifications and look at federal and provincial guidelines of operation associated with lasers. The student will get hands-on experience working with Laser Q-Switch and Erbium YAG Lasers. Learn skin resurfacing, scar revision, and tattoo removal. Client and technician safety practices are enforced, and esthetic scope of practice are abided by.

Unit 16 Semi-permanent Makeup – Micropigmentation open

This course looks at tattoos and their evolution into the world of cosmetics and permanent makeup. Learning the importance of corrective makeup and the role eyebrows have by framing the face. Understanding the skin's physiology and revisiting colour theory in order to implant pigment correctly and effectively for best results. Identify the different anatomical shapes of the face and correctly measure symmetrical eyebrows.
